LITERACY COUNCIL OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY SEEKS BOARD MEMBERS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Geneva Brooks March 1, 2019 Assistant Director, Development and Communications [email protected] (301) 610-0030 ROCKVILLE, Md. – The Literacy Council of Montgomery County (LCMC) is seeking several Board Members with a demonstrated keen interest in our mission to serve as at-large members and as members of our Budget, Finance, and Compensation Committee, or our Fundraising Committee. The Board of Directors consists of four officers and up to six members at-large. There are four standing committees of the Board: Executive; Budget, Finance and Compensation; Governance, Recruitment, and Board Development; and Fundraising. Each Board member serves on one of these committees as part of their responsibilities. The Board, the Executive Director and the permanent staff share the management responsibilities for LCMC. The Board has responsibility for setting strategy, providing organizational and financial oversight, and supporting LCMC’s mission and programs. We are particularly keen to welcome new Board members with some or all of the following attributes: experience and enthusiasm for outreach and fundraising; involvement and contacts with the local business community; experience and involvement with local government agencies, particularly those serving the adult learning community; and knowledge and experience in reading and interpreting financial statements and related financial information. The LCMC Board of Directors is committed to having a diverse membership, so we encourage applications from people of all backgrounds, genders, ages, ethnicities, cultures, and life experiences. Interested persons should submit an application for Board membership to James Hastings, Chair, Governance, Recruitment, and Board Development Committee. Applications should include a cover letter and a resume. The cover letter should stress the relevant experience of the applicant and the interest in in adult education. About : The LCMC is a nonprofit organization founded in 1963, whose work is based on the understanding that to be literate in today’s economy means having the requisite skills to be able to participate actively in the workforce and the local community. Many adults in Montgomery County lack the literacy skills to be able to participate fully in the community and local economy. In addition, approximately 40% of Montgomery County residents have a language other than English as their first or primary language. With a 1.3M dollar operating budget, 11 full time staff, 28 part-time instructors and a large cadre of volunteer tutors, we provide critical adult educational services to more than 2000 adult students per year. ###
