Help Determine Funding for Adult English Literacy Classes in Montgomery County

Help Determine Funding for Adult English Literacy Classes in Montgomery County

We need your assistance! The success of a community rests on the ability of its members to be able to connect, share ideas, and address challenges together. To do this, its members must be able to communicate in a common language. ESOL instruction (English for Speakers of Other Languages) has a positive impact on the whole community. English literacy is a core skill for adults to achieve their goals and to clearly steer their families onto a pathway to success.

Volunteer to be part of the Community Grants Panel of the Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy (MCAEL) for Fiscal Year 2019. MCAEL is a community coalition that works to expand access to, and improve the quality of, adult English literacy classes in Montgomery County, MD. MCAEL’s role as a backbone organization allows it to leverage data, resources, and funding to create a multiplier effect for the 60+ organizations and their 1500+ staff and instructors who serve almost 15,000 adults in the county each year. Our current goal is to increase the number of learners reached from 15,000 to 21,000 by 2021; you are an important part of our success. With funding from the Montgomery County government, MCAEL offers grants to support quality adult ESOL classes.

MCAEL is seeking nonprofit professionals, business leaders, education/ESOL specialists, and community representatives from in and around the Montgomery County area to serve on the Community Grants Panel. (Note: Individuals who are in leadership roles -- e.g., staff members or board members, etc. -- in literacy organizations receiving or applying for grant funding from MCAEL in Montgomery County or those who otherwise have a similar conflict of interest are not eligible.)

The grants process will run from April – May 2019; the time commitment includes the following meetings:
• Thursday, April 11th 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM Orientation and Training
• Wednesday, May 8th 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Applicant Interviews
• Friday, May 10th 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM Applicant Interviews
• Friday, May 31st 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM Final Grant Panel Meeting

(April 11th and May 31st meetings are mandatory; must be available either May 8th or May 10th morning or afternoon.) Grant panelists read and evaluate 20-30 applications, interview applicants, and join in making funding recommendations to the MCAEL Board of Directors. A more detailed schedule of time commitment is available upon request.

Interested applicants living or working in the County should submit a letter of interest with a current resume  or Linked In Bio to Ms. Rudi Jeung, Program Manager, at rjeung@mcael.org.
